Starting off this week honoring the lost legend Virgil Abloh, we were fortunate to meet him a few years back and will continue to be inspired by his vision. We’ve spent the last 24 reflecting on his legacy, anticipating Virgil was here while also re-reading various items in our library like these interviews in Sleek and System alongside ICONS & PRESENTED FOR YOUR INSPIRATION it’s incredible how prolific and impactful he was in such a limited time. Our condolences to those close to him.

ON VIEW ART BASEL

While Momentum won’t return this year (there’s always next year) There are a number of amazing shows happening in Miami this week:

SHATTERED GLASS

“Shattered Glass, the acclaimed exhibition of new art by emerging artists of color that was shown at Jeffrey Deitch Los Angeles last spring, will be presented in an expanded version in the Moore Building in the Miami Design District from November 29 – December 5, 2021. The Los Angeles version of Shattered Glass, curated by Melahn Frierson and A.J. Girard, was more than an exhibition, it was a phenomenon, attracting 1,000 visitors per day in its final weeks.”

Bleeding Out

Whether you’re a die-hard fan or an aspiring player, basketball is an undeniably emotional sport. The on-court intensity creates epic character-building and -breaking moments, but is basketball emo?
Opening on Monday (December 1) from 6PM until late, Bleeding Out is a group exhibition that includes FRANCHISE contributors Chris Lloyd and Kirsten Chen. Other artists in Bleeding Out include Gern en Regalia owner Mario Miron, photographers Nick Sethi and Kiernan “Knives” Francis, multimedia artist Sofia Leilani, and more. Curated by Matthew Tully Dugan, the show explores the emo phenomenon of the early 2000’s and its expressions in identity, media and technology. The idea of Bleeding Out also appears in moments like Pistons center Isaiah Stewart’s bloody clash with LeBron’s elbow— Stewart actually attended the same all-boys high school in Rochester, NY as Dugan, who’s heard that he’s the nicest dude ever.
Bleeding Out is located at 1051 Collins Avenue, Room 307, Miami Beach. Please DM @art_death for more information.

On shelves

Matt McCormick - Horse

To some, the horse epitomizes an idea of Americana — Matt McCormick explores the origins of the iconography and archetypes of the animal. Through a collection of found and original works, McCormick lays out the evolution of the horse and its symbolism in culture — past, present, and future.

I judge wisely as if nothing ever surprise me
Lounging between two pillars of ivory
I'm lively, my dome piece is like building stones in Greece
Our poems are deep, from ancient tomes I speak
I'm overwhelmed as my mind roams the realm
My eye's the visions, memory is the film
Others act sub-tile, but they fragile above cloud
